A Piece of History Preserved

When my grandmother died several years ago, my Mom and Aunt were going through her things to disperse them. They came across a pile of moth-eaten quilt patches that had been hand pieced by my great-grandmother. Some of them were rather tattered and none of them were in perfect condition. My Aunt's first reaction was to throw them away. {gasp} Thankfully, my Mom intervened and scarfed them up. Not sure what to do with them, they sat on a closet shelf for several months. Then 2 years ago at Christmas, she had an artist friend of hers matte and frame them. She gave them to my siblings and I as a keepsake - complete with the original creator's name and date of birth/death.
My great-grandmother died before I was born, but I have a piece of her handiwork wonderfully preserved. Truly one of the best Christmas presents I have ever received!
I'm guessing great-grandmother hand-made all their clothes - including pants - thus the dark, solid colors.

To minimize the moth-eaten spots (this is one of the best ones), my Mom put black paper behind the patch. You can see a spot in the lighter triangle. I love this wonderfully authentic piece of history preserved!

  3. It's wonderful, Rachel! I love having treasures like those from older family members. Having the quilt pieces behind glass will hopefully preserve them for a long time. What a great present to get at Christmas!
