Charleston Getaway

Last week this time, I was in Charleston, SC celebrating my 10th anniversary with my better half. Even though the locals were complaining about the rain and cold, I thought it felt heavenly compared to NW Ohio. We were there for 3 days (which was not near long enough) and it rained 2 of them. The 3rd day was sunny but only in the 60's.

The weekend prior to Charleston, we as a family traveled to Harrisonburg, VA to my brother's wedding.
My handsome brother and his beautiful bride.

Then from there, our 3 boys went to Maryland with my parents and DH and I started south to Charleston. We arrived at our motel in North Charleston late Sunday afternoon and left Thursday morning. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday we tried to hit some of the highlights of Charleston but with the weather not cooperating, we ended up doing some antiquing. (Which is not a bad thing :) ) I found something for my Etsy shop which I hope to list soon.

Here are some of our pics (not in any particular order):

Angel Oak Tree above and below DH is standing by the trunk to give you an idea how HUGE it is.

Monday evening the weather cooperated enough for us to go on a dolphin watching tour. It was very hard to get a still shot but I did get several good videos. Here's one of the few shots that show more than a circle on the water. :) Also, some other 'water' shots.

Charleston is called the city of churches. Here are 2 of the many we saw. Gorgeous old architecture!

On Tuesday it rained pretty much all day so we went to an old plantation house, Drayton Hall. Drayton Hall is being preserved, not restored. Therefore, there is no running water or electricity. The rooms are huge and grand. I didn't take many pictures because it was cloudy that day and there is only natural light in there but here are a few:

(Sorry this is so grainy!)
The only original plaster ceiling - hand carved!
And a few shots of some of the gorgeous flowers:

And finally, my better half and I:

Our anniversary isn't actually until the end of May so I'm hoping to celebrate again. ;) With at least a dinner out.

Those of you who may still be looking for pics of the kitchen, I haven't forgotten. We still have the countertop to finish and install. We talked about several options for them, one of which was concrete, but we ended up going with wood. DH is making them in Uncle's shop. We hope to have them finished soon.

An Update From the Farmhouse

If you don't follow me on Facebook, you're probably wondering if I've expired. This post will attempt to update you on what I've been up to.

We have a rental house (which is actually the first house hubby and I lived in after we were married) and in November our tenants informed us they were moving at the end of the month. *sad face* We have done very little to the house since we moved out and have allowed tenants to paint if they wish. This time, however, we decided that WE would paint (I've discovered that not everyone knows HOW to paint) and while we were at it, do a few other 'updates'.  Most of the light fixtures were the same ones we bought the house with and honestly, I can't believe I lived with them for over 2 years. They were U.G.L.Y. 80's style lights. Also, the bedroom carpets have needed replaced for a long time. We finally felt like we were at a place financially to do it so they got replaced. It is a 2 bedroom, 1 1/2 bath and the half bath had carpet. YEEE-UCK! We had them lay vinyl in there and it's so. much. nicer. In addition to new flooring, I replaced 5 light fixtures. I changed a bunch of 2-prong outlets to 3-prong ones. I patched holes in walls. I painted trim and walls. I installed trim in the half-bath and replaced a leaking faucet in there. Hubby replaced both toilets (we discovered one had been leaking!) and we raised the rent! :) All of this work took up most of 3 weeks, not counting the 3 days I had the flu :(, and just last week, I handed the keys over to our new tenants.

So that pretty much shot the month of December and Christmas was upon me before I had time to prepare. We had traveled to Maryland over Thanksgiving and had Christmas with my family then. Christmas Day was spent with hubby's family and trying to dodge the flu bug that was going around. Thankfully, only 1 son got it. I did zero decorating for Christmas and 2 days after Christmas, it dawned on me that I still had some fall decor up. It's been bare basics around here and I'm looking forward to having more time in January to focus on things around here and do a few projects before we start our next 'big' project.

Recently, we had an amazing opportunity to buy a house and property (separate pieces) for a super price. The house is small and needs curb appeal but the inside of the house doesn't need much. It is a 3 bedroom/1 bath and the bedrooms are very small. To make it more re-salable, we are looking into making it into a 2 bedroom, 2 bath. But first we have to get rid of the squatter. :( We were told at closing that the tenant was moved out but we never went and made sure this was the case. Lesson learned. We closed for the house on December 9 but were so busy with the rental that we didn't have time to go check out the other place. On Christmas Day, we took our key and went (with some of hubby's family) to check it out. We had a not nice surprise in the form of the door screwed shut and a note saying the premises were still occupied by ___________ and if we entered without his permission, he would press charges for breaking and entering. (Pretty sure he can't do that since he is there illegally!) Anyway, our key did not let us in and now we have to go through the eviction process of removing him since he obviously doesn't plan to move on his own. :( That will be at least a month so in that waiting time, I'm hoping to work on some things around here. Hubby mostly has my 'new' shop ready to move into so I want to start on that this week.

Hopefully this gives you an idea what I've been up to and why I've sorely neglected my blog the last month. I'll leave you with our 'Christmas' picture and wishes for a HAPPY NEW YEAR!

The Countdown is On!

Wow! Has it really been almost 3 weeks since my last post?! Where has the time gone.... I've been slowly working on some projects but don't have any of them finished to show you. Maybe in the next several weeks as I sit (ahem) around waiting for this baby.... ha!

Last week at my doctor's appointment, I found out something that shelved the 'projects' and spurred the cleaning/organizing. At 34+ weeks, I was starting to dilate. I've been having some stronger contractions than I should.... Doctor says we need to keep this baby with me until at least 37 weeks so she put me on meds to stop the contractions and buy some time. Well, she also said I'm supposed to limit my activity to 'light' activity. WHAT?! How am I supposed to do that? Does she know what my 'to-do' list looks like? Evidently not....

Well, I'm trying to be a good girl .... so I hired my niece to come help me for a couple days to whip everything into shape. Monday I started organizing in the office... it was the BIGGEST disaster! I didn't even take before pictures - it was that bad. Sometime, I will show after pictures but right now, we're still 'between'. Yesterday and today are the days my niece is helping me and we are working upstairs. Organizing and cleaning. We got the 2 bedrooms and the toy room done yesterday. The only room left for today is my sewing room - ack! It's a mess!

And so, the countdown is on! My official '37 week' mark is NEXT Saturday (after Thanksgiving). Maybe the meds will have slowed me down so much that I will go overdue.... In which case, I will have a few weeks to finish up those projects that have been shelved. :)

I'll leave you with the ultrasound picture I got at 30 weeks - isn't he so sweet? (Ok, I know I'm biased. You don't have to agree with me.)

Sharing A Laugh ... Because Today Is Monday!

I know I haven't posted in awhile. Actually I have things to blog about but I don't have a camera. Somehow, DH lost it. I've been looking for a good, affordable camera on Amazon (because I trade in my Swagbucks for Amazon dollars) and I think I've found one I want. But until I get it, I'm "cameraless".

So, on to a laugh for today. Kids say the funniest things sometimes. Yesterday when we got in our van after church our youngest (4) began making these loud complaining noises. When I asked him what was wrong, he said, "I keep sucking hotness up my nose!" What a funny way to say it. We laughed, partly because he was truly distressed about it, and partly because it's such a funny thing to say! So, happy Monday to you all! (And stay inside where you don't have to suck up hotness.) :)

Ok, I Relent...

I said in this post that there would be no explanation for my absentee blogging. But, I relent. Here's why:
We're expecting a bundle of joy around the middle of December. Hip hip hooray!

Thoughts on Finances and God's Goodness and Provision

First I'm going to start with a disclaimer: I am not a financial counselor. If you thought by the title you were going to get financial advice, you might save yourself the time of reading this. If, however, you have been affected by the 'economic crisis' in which we are living, you may be inspired by reading. Some of you may be saying, "but the crisis is over". I disagree. It may have improved and even 'gone away' for some, but in my geographical area, more particularly, this household, there is still a crisis.

Let me give you some history of our family and work situation. When my husband and I were married 7 years ago, he owned and operated a small (2 employees besides himself) but very successful and growing excavating business. He also owned 3 over-the-road semi trucks and drove one of them as he needed to. Excavating was booming (it was during the housing boom) and the trucks were becoming more of a nuisance so he decided to sell them and focus on the excavating. Things went VERY WELL for us for about 3 or 4 years. Then the economic depression. I can't say we felt the effects of it right away. Things definitely slowed down but we were still able to make a decent living. Around this same time, we purchased the small (30 acres) farm on which we live. We had been living in a small (1200 sq. ft.) house in town. We bought that house right at the peak of the market. (Big mistake, but how did we know?) When we bought this farm, we tried selling our house in town. Remember I said it was right around the time of the crash..... Well, no one wanted a small 2-bedroom house (that was over-priced). We owed too much on it to sell it for (then) market value. We tried unsuccessfully to sell it for well over a year before deciding to rent it out. We currently have good renters - a big blessing!

Over the past 3+ years, the excavating basically slowly screeched to a halt. Since that was our sole livelyhood, DH went on a job hunt. His cousin was working (in excavating) for a man who agreed to buy a semi-truck for DH to drive. I was to be his dispatcher. This was not the dream job for either of us. But, it was a generous offer on the employer's part and it paid the bills. The downsides were: DH was gone all week on the road and I, in addition to trying to keep the home fires burning, had to spend HOURS at the computer looking for the next load. Our paycheck depended on it. Trucking was hot and loads would disappear off the board seconds after they were posted. It was a very stressful 2 years or so.... until the employer decided to sell the truck. Once again, DH is left without a job. This happened in December last year (2010). During the time the excavating was slowly dying, we were also slowing acquiring debt. Most of the time there just wasn't enough money to meet all our obligations. (We still had loans on several pieces of equipment.) We were robbing Peter to pay Paul.... and digging a deeper hole. Yet, we always managed to keep everything fairly current. We made a huge mistake {LEARN FROM US} and took out 'promotional offers' on credit cards. Of course, our intention was to pay them back before the promotional period ended. This did NOT happen and we were making the minimum payment and getting virtually nowhere.

So, here we are, right before Christmas, out of a job and in debt to our ears. By now, we had given up on excavating ever coming back. One right after another major excavating businesses in the state were selling out. We kept all our equipment in hopes that it would some day pick up. This didn't happen and we started selling things. We didn't sell everything but we were able to pay off MOST of the credit card debt. This was a big relief but we still didn't have a steady income. A successful business owner in our church knew of DH's plight and offered him a temporary position with good wages. What an answer to prayer! In January he started working as an equipment operator, something at which he is very experienced. While we are very thankful for this job, our faith has been put to the test again. You see, we have had an abnormal amount of rain this Spring. When it rains, DH is unable to work. No work means no paycheck. No paycheck means no home improvements, etc. :) There have actually been quite a few weeks that DH couldn't work. Last week was one of them. On Monday, he looked at the extended forecast for this week and noted that he probably wouldn't be able to work much this week either. It's coming up the end of the month which means our mortgages are due. And there have been too many weeks off this month and the funds are not there. Back on our knees.... there's only One who can help us. DH decided it's time to sell the larger of our two dump trucks. Before he does so, he wants to repaint the bed. He has proved in the past that money spent improving the looks of something pays for itself in the final selling price. Since he's taking it to an auction, he wants every advantage he can get. So, he called on Monday to the place he would have it painted. They told him that it was a good day to bring it for an estimate because the owner was there.

When DH came home he was bursting with excitement. Not only was the estimate less than he figured, but he had some work to do for THEM! Plus, the owner wanted to buy a landscape tool that DH had for sale. So, just like that, God provided the money for our mortgage this month!

So, what is the moral of all this rambling? Just this, God brings us to our knees through less than desirable circumstances so He can show us His power. There have been many more times in our 'crisis' that God has provided 'just in time', but this is the most recent and it has been an item of praise these two days.

I also want to add at the end - I realize that even amidst our struggles we are still VERY blessed! I have not watched my loved ones lifted away in a fierce wind or had my house and belongings blown to the next county. I'm very blessed that even amidst tornado threats, we have been unscathed. My thoughts and prayers are with those who have lost everything.

Sometimes You Win and Sometimes You Lose....And This Time I Lost

Oh, the agony! While I was trying to convince DH that a certain large piece on eBay was worth driving 5 hours for, someone STOLE this baby for $149.99. (If her new owner is reading this, I hope you know how lucky you are!)
Isn't she GORGEOUS!?

I know she's a little rough but, oh, the plans I had for her!

Speaking of plans reminds me of one of my favorite verses in the Bible:
For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD,
"plans to prosper you and not to harm you,
plans to give you hope and a future.
Jeremiah 29:11 NIV

So, I guess she wasn't meant to be mine. Maybe a better deal is right around the corner. I want to check out our local ReStore today - maybe my goldmine is waiting.
